Wednesday August 31, 2016 is We Love Memoirs Day.

“We Love Memoirs was set up on 31st August 2013 by two memoir authors, Victoria Twead and Alan Parks, who wanted to create a place where memoir readers and authors could come together and chat. Victoria Twead is a New York Times bestselling author of “Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools” and the “Old Fools” series, while Alan Parks is the author of “Seriously Mum, What’s an Alpaca?” and the “Seriously Mum” series. Victoria and Alan were determined to foster a warm community and have always discouraged authors from pushing their own books at readers. The results have been astounding, and WLM has grown quickly. New friendships are formed every day, and WLM meet-ups across the globe have become common. Small wonder that the We Love Memoirs community – which can be found here at https://www.facebook.com/groups/welovememoirs/ – is often described as “the friendliest group on Facebook”.” ^sPm – #sharpharmade From ‘Days of the Year’ http://ow.ly/i/mC16X

Tuesday August 30, 2016 is Toasted Marshmallow Day.

“Most people have fond memories of childhood, sat by a roaring campfire toasting marshmallows on wooden sticks… Yum! Toasted Marshmallow Day is a chance to re-live those memories, and for people who’ve never experienced toasting marshmallows to find out what all the fuss is about.” ^sPm – #sharpharmade From ‘Days of the Year’ http://ow.ly/i/mzVt4

Tuesday August 30, 2016 is Holistic Pet Day.

“Holistic medicine has grown in popularity over recent years but many people will not have considered it in terms of treating their pets. Holistic Pet day was set up to try and bring more publicity to the idea that holistic treatments, where a pet’s lifestyle, diet and environment are fully considered, are more beneficial. Using holistic treatments is said to improve nutrition, increase your pet’s energy and even cure some chronic conditions.

Holistic Pet Day was started by Coleen Paige from the Animal Miracle Foundation to encourage owners to look at all issues that could impact on the welfare of their pet. There are no set celebrations to commemorate the day although it is used as an annual opportunity to promote holistic treatments with press articles and support from many animal organizations.” ^sPm – #sharpharmade From ‘Days of the Year’ http://ow.ly/i/mzTXe

Tuesday August 30, 2016 is Slinky Day.

“The Slink is a Toy Hall of Fame superstar. Sitting up there with the likes of Barbie, G.I. Joe and LEGO, this powerhouse of a toy has the humblest of beginnings. But even with those humble beginnings, it was more than enough to bring it to the attention of children worldwide, and later having Slinky Day to remember, and play with, those metal and plastic coils.

The Slinky was originally designed and sold in the 1940s. The inventor had accidentally knocked a spring off the shelf, and watched it ‘walk’ down a series of books, to a tabletop, and then to the floor where it neatly coiled itself. The creator, Richard James, had gone home to his wife Betty and said “I think if I got the right property of steel and the right tension, I could make it walk. “ It took the better part of a year, but he had done it. They were granted permission to set up an inclined plane in the toy section of Gimbles Department Store. A year later, the Slinky was introduced at the American Toy Fair, the largest gathering of businesses that produce, and market, toys to various stores.

United States troops used them as mobile radio antennas, as have amateur radio operators. NASA uses them in experiments on Space Shuttles, and teachers use them to simulate the properties of oscillation in waves.

How to celebrate Slinky Day:
Figure out how to get it to walk down a hill, or if you can get it to walk from the table down some various household things like chairs, books and end tables, to end up neatly coiled on the floor. Or for those extreme enthusiasts out there, see about breaking the Guinness Book of World Records distance for longest Slinky distance traveled.

Maybe look into some of the science behind how the Slinky works, and exactly why the Slinky does what it does.” ^sPm – #sharpharmade From ‘Days of the Year’ http://ow.ly/i/mzQzq

Monday August 29, 2016 is Individual Rights Day.

“In honor of John Locke, whose philosophical writings argued for the rights of each single human being, Individual Rights Day is celebrated on August 29th, the date of Locke’s birth. According to Locke, “Anything that a man has as a matter of human rights or civil rights is to remain inviolably his,” and although Locke conceded that humans surrendered some natural rights in exchange for the collective protection afforded by societies, he held that basic individual rights include life, liberty, property, freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom to petition government.

Individual Rights Day was initiated by the founder of the Objectivist Party, Dr. Tom Stevens, who supports John Locke’s philosophies regarding the rights of society’s smallest minority and basic unit – the individual. Celebrations of Individual Rights Day include reading about John Locke and his views, reviewing your country’s commitment to the protection of rights and appreciating the value of freedom and the sacrosanct nature of individual rights.” ^sPm – #sharpharmade Fr ‘Days of the Year’ http://ow.ly/i/mvVVN

Monday August 29, 2016 is More Herbs, Less Salt Day.

“Eating a healthy, balanced diet is often easier said than done – it takes thought, time and effort to prepare fresh and nutritious food, when less healthy options are often much easier and more convenient! .

More Herbs, Less Salt Day encourages you to take a simple step to re-align this balance, through the use of herbs in home-cooked dishes in place of salt. It doesn’t take much room or effort to grow a variety of fresh herbs, and a little rosemary, thyme, mint or other herbs can do just as much to enrich a dish as a heavy dose of salt.” ^sPm – #sharpharmade Fr ‘Days of the Year’ http://ow.ly/i/mvVdJ

Sunday August 28, 2016 is Bow Tie Day.

“A whirling noise in the distance, followed by a male in a bow tie and a female in a summer dress running out of a blue police box. A small wooden puppet with a large blue bow tie that is still there when the puppet comes to life. Or a sharply dressed man hunting around for information in order to save the world from annihilation. All three examples are notable by a bow tie that the character wears. Whether it be the Doctor from Dr. Who, Pinocchio, or James Bond, each wears a bow tie very well, and accentuates it for that very character.

Typically the bow tie is worn as an accessory to accentuate the neck, helping draw eyes up to the face and away from the shoulders and chest.

How to celebrate Bow Tie Day:
Snag a bow tie and wear it! It is that simple, although tying a bow tie isn’t! Many pieces of clothing can be paired with the flourished bow, and probably the most notable look is the button up shirt. Sure, it may look a little dated, but the classics never truly die…. bow ties have been worn by people looking to make better impressions since the 17th century.

Many characters have been notably wearing bow ties, including the ever popular James Bond, in all of his different actors, the bow tie is always there, giving the actor an air of distinguished quality. There has been the infamous Dr. Nye, who wears a bow tie while explaining how, and why, science works. His quote, “If you’re working with liquid nitrogen and your tie falls into it, it’s funny in a way to the audience but it’s also — pun intended — a little bit of a pain in the neck.” really drives home the differences between a neck tie and a bow tie. So don’t underestimate the use of this small, but extremely elegant addition to your dressing up, and wear them with pride this Bow Tie Day!” ^sPm – #sharpharmade Fr ‘Days of the Year’ http://ow.ly/i/mvyVq
